The Green River Killings

I've been stressing about how to type this one up. There were so many victims. There's no way I could get to every abduction and recovery site. Let alone post them all here. I did manage to get to quite a few of them though. If you're really interested in where all of the places are, buy Ann Rule's book, Green River, Running Red. I also made it to all of the homes Gary Ridgway lived in throughout his madness. I've compiled a timeline of events, which is very long. He was a busy guy. I just didn't know how else to present this without writing a novel. Also, for those who don't know the area, Highway 99 South has three names. North of 160th it's called Tukwila International Blvd. From 160th to 220th, it's Pacific Highway South. South of 220th, it's Highway 99. The airport is between S. 175th and S. 188th Streets. So with that said, here we go.
  • January, 1982- Gary Ridgway moves to 21859 32nd Place S. in SeaTac about three miles from where the first victims were found
    21859 32nd Place S.

  • December 18, 2003- Ridgway is sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Sentence did not include suspected murders in Oregon and British Columbia.
Gary Ridgway is not only a psycho, he's an asshole. He led Reichert and the detectives on several wild-goose chases in order to stay at the warehouse as long as he could. He's also unbelievably arrogant. He loved being in the spotlight while the investigation and trial were going on. He always had a stupid smirk on his face. His IQ is only 80. During his confession he said, "I would talk to her... and get her mind off of the, sex, anything she was nervous about. And think, you know, she thinks, "Oh, this guy cares"... which I didn't. I just want to, uh, get her in the vehicle and eventually kill her." I hope his life in prison is horrible.
To all the girls and women he killed, RIP.

Jimi Hendrix Was Here

On September 18th, 1970 Jimi Hendrix was sleeping at his girlfriend Monika Danneman's apartment in London. She left for cigarettes and when she came back, Jimi was covered in vomit. She tried to wake him. For some reason, she called Jimi's good friend Eric Burdon instead of an ambulance.
Eric shouted into the phone, "Call the fucking ambulance!" Monika said she wasn't sure she should, because Jimi might get mad about the scandal. (Idiot!) Eric repeated his order. The ambulance arrived about 20 minutes later. From David Henderson's "Scuse Me While I Kiss The Sky" "Instead of laying him down in the ambulance, they sat him in a chair and strapped him upright. He tried to bend over so he could vomit, but one of the attendants quickly pushed his head back and strapped him in tighter. Jimi's head rolled back as the ambulance driver took off. The speeding ambulance pressed his body back in the chair and made it even more difficult for him to get his head down. There was bile and vomit near his Adam's apple. Jimi was unable to speak. Even if he could, the ball of vomit in his throat prevented him. The vomit massed in his vocal chords. His lungs became congested. His heart began to pump harder, and the right ventricle dilated. Fluid began to seep into his lungs. He was rushed from the ambulance into St. Mary Abbots Hospital. The doctors worked on him for over an hour, to no avail." He was pronounced dead at 11:25 am. His last meal was a tuna sandwich. Jimi Hendrix was born on November 27, 1942 in Seattle, the first of five children to James Allen "Al" Hendrix and Lucille Jeter. It's rumored that Al was born with six fingers on each hand.
Hendrix Home in 2001
Jimi's mother was a very neglectful alcoholic and she left him and his siblings alone at night to drink in the bars while Al was away in the Army. Their house was at 2603 S. Washington St. After Al was discharged from the Army, fighting was common in the Hendrix home. Jimi would hide in a closet to escape his life. His parents would finally divorce when Jimi was nine. His mother developed cirrhosis of the liver and died on February 2, 1958. Jimi was 15. Around this time, he acquired his first acoustic guitar.
Temple De Hirsch
He taught himself to play by watching others and listening to records in his room. (He really was a genius) Jimi's stage moves, including playing with his teeth and behind his back, were taken from a fellow Seattle musician, Butch Snipes, guitarist with local band The Sharps. Hendrix's first gig was with an unnamed band in the basement of a Seattle synagogue at 1511 East Pike. He was fired from the band for acting "too wild" onstage. (Big mistake, huge) The first formal band he played in was The Velvetones, who performed regularly at a community house at the Yesler Projects at 825 East Yesler, without pay. This is one rough area.

Seattle cops don't even want to respond to calls over there. Jimi later joined the Rocking Kings, who played a few shows at The Birdland at 2203 East Madison. A Safeway with condo's above it sits there now.

Around this time, Jimi was expelled from Garfield High School at 400 23rd Ave for poor grades and attendance.

He was later given an honorary diploma, and in the 1990's a bust of him was placed in the school library. Garfield loves it's famous former students. A new performing arts center is named after Quincy Jones.

Jimi got in trouble for riding in stolen cars and was given the choice between spending two years in jail or joining the Army. He enlisted on May 31, 1961. At the base recreation center, he met fellow soldier and bass player, Billy Cox, who eventually became the bass player for The Jimi Hendrix Experience. He's the only member of the band alive today. Jimi was released from the Army in 1962 and he and Billy moved to Tennessee to work on the band. They played gigs here and there but Jimi decided to try his luck in New York. He moved to Harlem and eventually became the guitar player for The Isley Brothers' back-up band until late 1964. He then began recording and performing with Little Richard. He would play with several performers and bands until early 1966. He then met Keith Richards' girlfriend Linda at the Cheetah Club in New York and she introduced him to producer Chas Chandler. Chandler took Jimi to London and signed him to a contract. The two put together The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Jimi sent for his buddy, Billy Cox. Their first single was "Hey Joe." They would put out three albums before Jimi died. After he died, his girlfriend Monika publicly claimed that she had only discovered that Jimi was sick at 11:00 a.m., but that he was breathing, though unconscious and unresponsive (the ambulance was called at 11:18 and arrived 11:27). She also said Jimi was alive when placed in the back of the ambulance at approximately 11:30, and that she rode with him on the way to the hospital. The ambulance crew later denied she was even there. Additionally, her comments about the timing of some events that morning often differed in places, varying from interview to interview. Police and ambulance statements reveal that there was no one but Hendrix in the apartment when they arrived at 11:27, and not only was he dead when they arrived on the scene, but he had been dead for some time. In 1996, Monika Dannemann committed suicide shortly after being found guilty of contempt of court for repeating a libel against Kathy Etchingham, who had been a girlfriend of Hendrix in the 1960's. (Wow) Jimi's body was returned to Seattle and he was buried in Greenwood Memorial Park in Renton. Concerns began to mount over fans damaging the grave after someone stole the gold guitar impression that was engraved on it.
Jimi's grave
His father decided to create a memorial site for his son, and to move his body to the new memorial. Al Hendrix died two months before it's completion in 2002. He's buried there too. A 2004 probate suit argued that Jimi's sister Janie and a cousin, Robert Hendrix paid themselves exorbitant salaries and covered their own mortgages and personal expenses from Experience Hendrix, LLC while the beneficiaries went without payment and Jimi's memorial went uncompleted. In early 2005, a judge handed down a ruling that left the final will intact, but replaced Janie and Robert's role at the financial helm of Experience Hendrix with an independent trustee.
The site of the Hendrix home today
In 2001, a local developer was asked to help save Jimi's childhood home. The site was going to be developed for condo's. He purchased the house for $30,000 and moved it to a city-owned lot at 2010 S. Jackson.
2010 S. Jackson today
He and Al Hendrix had hopes of renovating the house and turning it into a music center. That never worked out and the city decided they needed the house to be moved again to make room for even more condo's. (Enough with the condos!!) The developer purchased a run down trailer park in Renton, across the street from the cemetery where Jimi is buried. He planned to tear down the trailer park and turn the house into a museum.

into a museum. The housing economy tanked and all plans fell through. The city of Renton gave the developer until March 27, 2009 to fix up the house.
The trailer park today
They said it was an eye-sore. It didn't happen. The house was demolished. The trailer park is still there though and boy is it lovely... It's hands down the most dilapidated trailer park I've ever seen. Crack-head city. Good thing they tore Jimi's house down though.

There is a statue of Jimi at Pine and Broadway and a park is named for him at 24th and Massachusetts. There are plans to add three really cool memorials on the empty field of that park.
Jimi is by far the biggest star to come from Seattle. Just one more reason why I love this city. RIP

Mary Kay Letourneau

She was born Mary Katherine Schmitz, in January 1962, in Orange County, California. She was the fourth child and first daughter of college professor John Schmitz, and his wife, Mary.
John would go on to be a State Representative and Senator. It's important to know that her father had an affair with one of his college students, Carla. She ended up having two of his children. A boy and a girl. John took no responsibility for the kids and said they "were their mother's problem." Mary left him for a while, only to go back. The three children at home (one of the sons drowned in the family pool) all knew about their other siblings. Carla died of diabetes when the kids were 11 and 13. They became wards of the state and were placed in an orphanage. (Terrible) Mary Kay had plans to pursue her own career in politics. She intended to move to Washington, D.C. following her graduation from Arizona State.  However, while still a student, she became pregnant with the child of fellow classmate Steve Letourneau. In 1985, the couple got married and dropped out of college before moving to his hometown of Anchorage. A year later, he took a job with Alaska Airlines and the family moved to Washington. They bought a house at 21824 4th Place South in Normandy Park, a suburb of Seattle.
Letourneau Home
They had three more children over the next few years. In 1989, Mary Kay got her teaching degree from Seattle University. That fall, she took a job at Shorewood Elementary in Burien. (Just north of Normandy Park)
 2725 S. 116th in Burien
She soon became a respected member of the faculty. (Not for long....) A few years into her career, Mrs. Letourneau became infatuated with student Vili Fualaau. He was 12. She encouraged his artistic talents and he spent time at her house. He formed a friendship with her oldest child, Steve, Jr. who was only a year younger than him. (a perfect cover)  In June 1996, she began a sexual relationship with the 13 year-old, (The 13 year-old) a relationship that Vili would later say he welcomed. (I'm sure he did) The relationship came crashing to a halt in February 1997, when Steve Letourneau found love letters that his wife had written to Vili. (Oh, shit!) Later that month, a relative of Steve's reported the affair to officials at Shorewood Elementary. The police were notified, and Letourneau (Who at the time was pregnant with Vili's child) was arrested at school during a faculty meeting. She was charged with statutory rape. Mrs. Letourneau's plan had been to pass the child off as Steve's. Problem was, they hadn't had sex in months. Oh yeah, and the child would be half Samoan. She gave birth to a baby girl named Audrey, in May 1997. Three months later, she pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree rape. Although a defense psychiatrist testified that she suffered from bipolar disorder, she was sentenced to seven years in prison. After serving 80 days, she was granted a release on the condition that she enter a treatment program for sex offenders and promise not to have any contact with Vili. She moved in with a friend in the Seward Park neighborhood of Seattle. In February 1998, her appetite for teen was just too much. She paged Vili, picked him up, and brought him to the neighborhood she was living in. She parked her car around the corner from her house, and the two proceeded to steam up the windows. A Seattle cop on patrol, noticed the windows and went knockin'. They were in the 4900 block of S. Angeline Street.
4900 Block of  S. Angeline St.
Besides the child in the front seat, cops found $6,200 in cash, passports, and receipts for $850 in clothing purchases, leading authorities to speculate that the two were planning to flee the country. As a result of the violation of her parole, Mrs. Letourneau was sentenced to serve her full prison term at the Washington Correction Center for Women. In October 1998, she gave birth to a second daughter by Vili. (Alexis was conceived in the car) Both girls were in the custody of Vili's mother while Mrs. Letourneau served her time. Steve of course divorced her and took their four children to Alaska. Mrs. Letourneau was released from prison in August 2004. Shortly after her release, a judge lifted an order that barred contact between her and Vili after the 21-year-old petitioned the court. They were soon engaged. (Can I call you Mary now, Mrs. Letourneau?) In May 2005, they were married at a winery in Woodinville.
It was paid for by Entertainment Tonight and they sold their wedding video to the press. Vili's mom wrote a book that was only published in France. She got a nice chunk of change but squandered it. Vili got DUI's and police were called to their house after neighbors heard gunshots. They now host "Hot For Teacher" parties at local nightclubs. Vili DJ's while Mary Kay dances or something. She's now 50. And a grandmother. She looks nothing like she used to. Her hair is bleached blonde, she works out, and her Polly Pocket dresses are long gone.
The lovely couple
She was eventually reunited with her older children, who visit often. The Fualaau's lived for several years in Des Moines, Wa. with their two daughters in a very secluded home.

I had to hike a long way down the beach to get there. It's accessible by a flight of at least 75 stairs (Which had a locked gate) or by boat.
This is the view

Mary and Vili were divorced in August of 2019. Vili is quoted as saying the relationship was never healthy from the start. Mary died of colorectal cancer on July 6, 2020. Vili was by her side. She was 58.

The Maurice Clemmons Manhunt

If you don't live in the Puget Sound area, you probably have no idea who he was. Well lemme tell ya. He was a life-long felon with 13 convictions between Arkansas and Washington. He was in the middle of a 108 year sentence when he decided to file a clemency appeal with Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee.

In his petition he wrote he came from "a very good Christian family" and was "raised much better than my actions speak." He also claimed he'd moved from Seattle to Arkansas as a teenager, and because he had no friends, he gave in to peer pressure and "fell in with the wrong crowd."  He complained that he received an overly harsh sentence. He expressed regret that his mother had recently died without seeing him turn his life around. On May 3, 2000, Huckabee commuted Clemmons' sentence to 47 years, 5 months and 19 days, which made him eligible for parole that day. He was set free on August 1, 2000. It only took him six months to violate his parole. He committed aggravated robbery and theft. On July 13, 2001 he was sentenced to 10 more years in prison. He was paroled again in 2004. He told the parole board he was "not ready" the first time he was released, but that he "doesn't want to die in prison" and will "try to do the right thing." Clemmons moved to Washington in 2004 while still on parole, which was approved by Arkansas authorities. (Get him outta here!)  He wasn't arrested again untill May of 2009. On May 9th, a Pierce County sheriff's deputy responded to Clemmons' Parkland home (A suburb of Tacoma) at 1118 South 131st St. after reports he was throwing rocks at houses, cars, and people.
Clemmons Residence
When the deputy tried to enter the house, one of Clemmons' cousins grabbed his wrist. After a struggle, Clemmons emerged from the house and punched the deputy in the face, and assaulted a second deputy who arrived to help. Clemmons was placed under arrest and taken to Pierce County Jail, where he continued to struggle and told jail workers, "I'll kill all you bitches." He was given two felony assault charges and two felony malicious mischief charges, but was released the next day after posting a $40,000 cash bond. On May 11, around 1 a.m., Clemmons appeared naked in his living room and ordered two female relatives, ages 11 and 12, to fondle him. The two reportedly complied out of fear, and the 11-year-old fled the house afterward. Clemmons took the 12-year-old into his bedroom along with his wife. Clemmons repeatedly referred to himself as Jesus, and said his wife was Eve. He raped the 12-year-old and let her go only after his wife begged him to. However, at about 4 a.m. that same morning, Clemmons gathered his family back into the living room and demanded they strip naked together. He later left the house, claiming the world was coming to an end and that he was "going to fly to heaven." A family member called 911 and police found Clemmons at a nearby second house he was building (How this guy had $40,000 in cash for bail and the funds to build a house is beyond me, he had no job) but he fled on foot and escaped. He failed to appear the next day for an arraignment on his May 9 charges. Child Protective Services investigated and substantiated the sexual abuse complaint. Latanya Clemmons, Maurice's sister, told authorities he had undergone a change and was "not in his right mind." He was arrested on July 1, 2009 after he appeared in a Pierce County court, trying to have his bench warrant thrown out. He was charged with second-degree rape of a child, as well as being a fugitive from Arkansas. At the time of his arrest, Clemmons made religiously themed comments and referred to himself as "the beast". He also told a police officer that President Barack Obama and LeBron James were his brothers, and Oprah Winfrey was his sister. (That explains where he got the money) During a court-ordered mental health evaluation, Clemmons told psychologists he had experienced hallucinations  of "people drinking blood and people eating babies, and lawlessness on the streets, like people were cannibals." A psychologist concluded Clemmons was competent to stand trial, which eliminated him as a candidate for involuntary commitment. An attorney for Clemmons notified the court he planned to pursue an insanity or diminished-capacity defense. On November 23, 2009, Clemmons paid $15,000 for a $190,000 bond from Jail Sucks Bail Bonds. Clemmons failed to check in with his community corrections officer within 24 hours of his release, but nothing was done in response. On Thanksgiving at his aunts, Clemmons told several people he planned to use a gun to murder police officers and others, including school children. He showed a gun to the people in the room and told them he had two others in his car. Clemmons said he planned to activate an alarm by removing a court-ordered ankle monitor, then he would shoot the police officers who responded to his house. In describing the planned murder, Clemmons said, "Knock, knock, knock, boom!" On the morning of November 29, Darcus Allen a friend from the Arkansas State Pen drove Clemmons past the Forza Coffee shop in Lakewood, another suburb of Tacoma at 11401 Steele Street.
The Coffee Shop
After they saw marked police cars in the parking lot, Allen drove back past the coffee shop and parked nearby. Around 8 a.m, Clemmons walked into the coffee shop, where four police officers were working on laptops before their shift. Clemmons opened fire on all four officers, shooting them to death. As Clemmons fled, one of the officers struggled with him in the doorway, then shot Clemmons in the back before dying of his own wound to the head.
Inside Coffee Shop
Clemmons stole his Glock before fleeing. He then went back to his house and told his brother Ricky and two friends, Eddie and Doug Davis he'd been shot by police. His brother allegedly gave Eddie and Doug keys to a car to "get Maurice out of here." As they drove, Clemmons told the brothers' he "had taken care of his business." The Davis brothers took him to other friends, who bandaged his wounds. Later that day, police received a tip that Clemmons was seeking shelter from friends in Seattle. Police pulled over a white car they believed to have been transporting him, and the female driver admitted Clemmons was a friend and she had brought him to Seattle even after he told her "he had killed a police officer or officers." The biggest manhunt the Seattle-Tacoma area had ever seen was on, and Clemmons was considered the most wanted man in the Pacific Northwest. Authorities surrounded the homes of Clemmons' friends and family in order to prevent him from finding shelter, and to determine who was helping him. After receiving what they later learned was a false tip, police locked down the house of Clemmons' aunt at 32nd and Yesler in the upper-class neighborhood of Leschi. After 11 hours and several attempts to coax or force him out of the house, including the use of a robot, tear gas, and flash-bang grenades, police entered and discovered Clemmons was not there.

The city of Seattle paid $900,000 in damages. Around 2:45 a.m., on December 1, an officer was on patrol and stopped to investigate a broken-down car in the 4400 block of South Kenyon St. in the crime-ridden Rainier Beach neighborhood. The car was idling with its hood up. The officer ran the plates and the car came back stolen.
Outside 4422 S. Kenyon St.
Clemmons approached the patrol car and the officer recognized him as the suspect in the Lakewood shooting. He ordered him to stop and show his hands, but instead Clemmons began to flee. Police claim he then stopped, turned around, and reached into his waist area for a gun. (that's probably a lie but I don't blame the cop) The officer fired several rounds at Clemmons and hit him at least twice, killing him. Clemmons was carrying the handgun he stole from Officer Richards at the coffee shop. After his death, multiple people were  arrested for helping him during and after the Lakewood shooting. The accomplices misled police, gave Clemmons cell phones and money, applied first aid to his gunshot wounds, and tried to help him leave the state. Among those arrested were Clemmons' sister, who bandaged his wounds and provided him transportation. She was sentenced to five years. Letricia Nelson received six years, Quiana Williams received five years, Eddie and Doug Davis received 10 and 7 years, and Clemmons' brother Ricky was found not guilty by a jury. Darcus Allen was arrested and charged with aggravated first-degree murder for his alleged role as Clemmons' getaway driver. Allen claims he did not know Clemmons' plans when he drove him to the coffee shop, but authorities argued he had known since Thanksgiving that Clemmons planned to murder police officers. He was sentenced to 420 years. The four slain officers were Mark Renninger, 39 (Killed with a shot to the head); Ronald Owens, 37 (Shot in the neck); Tina Griswold, 40 (Shot in the head); and Greg Richards, 42 (Shot in the head).
